On Tuesday July 14, Stuart Ramsay will be at the Old Gold serving up a very special bourbon and beer tasting. From 5-9pm, thirsty patrons can get a glass of Whiskyback Gold beer and a pour of Henry McKenna 10yr bourbon all for the low, low, low price of $5. What a deal.
Thank you to each and every person who attended, ate, and drank at last night's benefit for Sean Knudeson.
Our goal was to raise $2000 for his medical bills.
Instead we raised over $7000!
We can't thank everyone enough.
If you missed out, you can still donate here.
It's our god-given inalienable right as Americans to lose at least a couple fingers to a hastily-made Chinese firework on the Fourth of July! That said, we will be closing the Old Gold early—at 10pm—on Saturday, July 4, to do just that.
USA, USA, etc.
As previously mentioned here, our friend/bartender Sean Knudeson was involved in a tragic car accident last week. Still hospitalized, Sean's family has setup a recovery fund and released this information on his condition.
While he is currently undergoing surgeries and recovering in the ICU at PeaceHealth Medical Center, he has an extremely long and difficult journey ahead of him. His condition is stable and his amazing team of doctors is estimating that his broken pelvis and tailbone, fractured ankle, and shattered left elbow will take several months of patience and therapy before he is able to stand again. Sean will be in a wheelchair until his pelvis, tailbone, and ankle heal enough to begin therapy to walk again. This is a very long road to recovery, but he will make it!
On Monday July 6, we will be donating all sales to help fund Sean's recovery. 100% from every drink, every meal, and every pour of whiskey will go to helping Sean. Please come out for this very personal and worthwhile cause.
Sean Knudeson, a bartender here at the Old Gold, was involved in a head-on collision on Wednesday, June 24 on Highway 14, just east of Washougal, WA. As of right now, Sean in stable condition at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, but a pair of passengers in the same vehicle died in the accident.
Frankly, we're not quite sure what to say here.
As a neighborhood bar, we are trivial in our very nature. We immerse ourselves in whiskey and sandwiches, we're not the ideal space for solemn observations on the fragility of life. But it truly is fragile. And Sean is an earnest and sweet and sincere human being, an intrical part of our close-knit staff. This isn't something that is supposed to happen.
Once we find out more about Sean's health, we'll post about it here. There will likely be a benefit of some sort in the coming months as well.
Please be safe out there.
Do you have a bicycle? Something gold to wear? Well, good. You're going to love the Rollin' Gold ride, part of this year's Pedalpalooza extravaganza.
On Saturday June 6 at 4pm, this family-friendly ride starts at NW 17th Ave and NW Lovejoy, the headquarters of Circa Cycles. All riders are encouraged to wear something/anything gold—these totally count, by the way. From the Circa HQ, you will ride north and eventually arrive at your destination, the Old Gold. Once here, you can relax after your (not that) grueling ride, and enjoy drink discounts on the patio.
In honor of the arrival of our good pal Summertime, we have extended our hours every Friday. Starting today, we will be open at noon. Spend your lunch break on the patio, or bring your laptop and "work" from the bar. This also means seven consecutive hours of Happy Hour for you, which is a very good thing.
After a couple months off to catch our breath, our educational journey into the heart of all things whiskey has returned!
Our next Whiskey 101 class will be held on Saturday, May 2nd at 1pm. The class fee is $30, which includes about a half-dozen tastings, plus we provide some snacks as well. Whiskey 101 always sells out, so book a spot now—you can do that via email, or at the bar.
We made a beer!
Well, sort of.
Last Fall the kind souls at Breakside Brewing invited us over to their facilities to work on a very special collaboration beer. The Breakside staff provided the immense talent, the conceptual ideas, the equipment, and the fresh ingredients. All we provided was a used wooden barrel.
Not just any barrel, it was our private Elmer T. Lee bourbon barrel, aged and ready to host a delicious beer inside its charred wooden walls. Which is exactly what Breakside did. After four-plus months of careful aging, the Barrel-Aged Old Golden was born. It's a hefty Belgian-style Tripel (9.2%, 29 IBU) hopped with a healthy dose of Hallertau Hersbrucker hops for an earthy and spicy nose with notes of vanilla, coconut, applejack, pear, and light caramel.
On Wednesday April 8th we will debut this beer, alongside special bourbon pairings and some food specials as well. Come on by for a taste while supplies last.
Do you know all there is to know about the NCAA college basketball tournament? Good for you.
Do you just randomly pick teams in your bracket based on mascot cuteness? Good for you as well.
No matter where your college sports fandom falls, you should really enter The Old Gold NCAA Tournament Pick 'Em League. It's free to enter and the victorious team will take home a $40 gift certificate, T-shirt, and the right to create a cocktail we'll serve during the championship game (which, as we all know, will feature the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles versus the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons).
Enter right here and good luck.
